“On the Seventh Day of Christmas… ” Swans

Today is New Years Day.

It’s also the Seventh Day of Christmas.

So let’s think about swans.  See…

Let’s try that again…

That’s better. Not quite like the song, though…

Okay, full disclosure …

There were only six swans and they’re not swimming. And, these were taken on the day before Christmas not today.

Just needed an excuse to show some swan pics. Just for fun.

Today’s gift

If one…

If one looks up

If one sets aside the work

If one pays attention to something other than details

If one puts down the ‘device’

If one raises one’s eyes to see something else

If one looks out the window once in awhile

One might see something

… unexpected

… kinda cool

… sorta comical

… graceful in a goofy sort of way

… maybe beautiful

… maybe not

… but interesting

… And delightful nonetheless

If one just looks up.

Unexpected Delight… Today’s Gift

Finding Spring

I went out looking for spring. Here’s what I found.

Wildlife.

Well, not so wild, since the chickens were cooped up and the horse stared at me from behind a fence.

Flowers.

There we go. Spring signs. Very nice.

Foliage.

Actually, I think this is an all-seasons shrub, colorful year round in these parts.

Green.

Green and spring. Spring and green. They just go together.

Rain.

Nothing says spring like a gentle shower.

Spring, wherever you are, may it be…
Today's gift.

Bob

Walking on the road…

I met Bob.
Lives just up the road
Last house on the right

I’m just visiting
Over there around the corner
First house on the left

He’s from Ohio
Forty years ago
… from Ohio

I’m from Michigan
All my life ago
… from Michigan

We chatted
About the weather
About Detroit, Toledo

… and other things

Here’s the sticky part
Bob wore an Ohio State hat
Buckeyes!

I wore plain clothes
Hiding my college loyalty
Go Blue!

Bob smiled
I grinned
We talked some more.

Ohio State fan
U of Michigan fan
Rivals, bitter

And, in spite of the differences

Bob from just up the road
And me, just visiting

Shook hands
Wished each other well
Went on our way

Today’s Riddle

What is black, white and red and found in the cosmos?

Hmmm? Tough question.

There are lots of red, white and black things.

The Cosmos is huge.

Hint?
It flies.

Lots of things fly.

Not much help is it?
Okay. How about this?
It flutters when it flies.

Ah, that narrows it down…

To about a million fluttery things.

Did I mention that it’s black, white and red?

Do you mean like black and white and read all over?

Nope.
Different riddle.
Try this
Think cosmos

Okay

Space, planets, celestial spheres, galaxies

Orion, the dippers, comets, the moon…

Not that Cosmos
These cosmos

Ah, now we’re getting somewhere!

Thinking…

Black, white, red

Flutters as it flies

In the cosmos,

Not to be confused with THE Cosmos

Last hint
Think naval
No! Not that one

I got it!

Naval as in nautical, not bellybutton

White, red and black

Flutter flying

Among the cosmos and and also within THE Cosmos

A Red Admiral butterfly

Unexpected delight

Why Do Hummingbirds Hum?

The afternoon settled in …

Cool, gray, empty

Looking for meaningful activity, pondering important things …

I settled in

A book at hand and camera at the ready…

Looking …

For the elusive hummingbird

And then

So, the question remains…

Hummingbirds hum because … why?

They’re happy… ?

And it’s hard to smile with that pointy beak

Echolocation…?

That’s a batty idea

Looking for a mate?

Hmmmm…

So why DO hummingbirds hum?

Anyone can tell you…

It’s because they don’t know the words!

Or maybe they do

“This is my Father’s world…

the birds their carols raise…

declaring their Maker’s praise.”

Today’s gift.

Nuthin’

I got nuthin’ for you today. Nothing to report. Nothing profound, witty, picturesque or poetic. There have been no earth shaking events. There’s not much of anything on which to report. Unless you want to hear that I did some errands, paid some bills, pulled some weeds, planted some mums. Just did ordinary stuff today. Hmmm…

Today…

This day…

This is the day…

This is the day the Lord has made.

That’s something isn’t it? Indeed! Today’s gift.
